How Hudson County's public system is organized
Hudson County is New Jersey's most densely populated county, stretching from Bayonne in the south through Jersey City and Hoboken to the North Hudson towns of Union City, West New York, Weehawken, Guttenberg, and North Bergen, with Secaucus, Kearny, Harrison, and East Newark to the west. County-funded addiction and mental health services are coordinated through the Hudson County Department of Health and Human Services. Current office phone numbers and program lists are published on the county's website.
Who county-funded treatment is for
County-funded treatment generally serves Hudson residents who have no insurance or cannot afford care. People who are enrolled in NJ FamilyCare, or who might qualify, should also read our NJ FamilyCare guide, since Medicaid coverage often opens more program options than county funding alone. If there is no coverage at all, our guide to treatment without insurance lays out the main public routes.
Same-day evaluation and crisis access
Jersey City Medical Center, at 355 Grand Street, operates Hudson County's state-designated psychiatric emergency screening service. Screening centers handle situations that need a same-day clinical evaluation. They are not a substitute for 911 in a medical emergency, such as a suspected overdose, a seizure, or someone who cannot be woken.
Recovery Court in Hudson County
The Superior Court of New Jersey, Hudson Vicinage, runs a Recovery Court track. It connects eligible defendants with supervised treatment instead of incarceration. Eligibility is decided by the court, so anyone facing charges should talk with a defense attorney or the public defender. Our Recovery Court guide explains the statewide program.
Getting around for treatment
Many Hudson residents do not drive. When comparing programs, ask how patients usually arrive, whether the program is near a PATH station, the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail, or a major bus route, and whether NJ FamilyCare transportation benefits apply. For outpatient care, travel time matters more than it seems, because IOP schedules often run several days a week.
Neighboring counties
Hudson residents often look at licensed programs across county lines. Our county guides for Middlesex, Somerset, and Monmouth counties cover the same public access points elsewhere in New Jersey.
